Toppan Japan establishes a 65 million euro joint venture to produce lithium battery packaging products in Sweden
Packaging giant Toppan and Toyo Seikan have signed an agreement to establish a joint venture worth 11 billion yen (approximately 65 million euros) to produce and sell automotive lithium-ion battery packaging products in Sweden.
This joint venture will be established in January 2025 with the goal of entering production and operation by 2026 or later.
As early as 2011, Toppan Japan established a joint venture with Toyo Seikan, T&T Enertechno, to produce packaging products for lithium-ion batteries used in smartphones and electric vehicles (EVs) in Japan. Toyo Seikan will be the main partner of this European joint venture, holding a 51% stake.
Industry comments suggest that this move is in response to the EU's goal of reducing carbon emissions by 2035, which has driven demand from European car manufacturers for square packaged lithium batteries. However, due to considerations of transportation efficiency, people are calling for the production of battery packaging to be located closer to the demand side.
