Synopsys' $35 billion acquisition of Ansys under review by UK regulatory authorities
The UK competition regulator has stated that it is investigating whether the acquisition of Ansys by chip design software manufacturer Synopsys for $35 billion will affect competition in the UK.
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has not yet launched a formal investigation into the transaction.
In January of this year, chip design software manufacturer Synopsys announced plans to acquire Ansys, whose software is used to manufacture various products, from airplanes to tennis rackets, for a transaction amount of $35 billion.
Synopsys specializes in developing chip design tools, which complement Ansys' software for evaluating a wider range of electronic systems that include these chips.
However, the proposed merger has raised concerns among analysts about the regulatory challenges that the already integrated business software industry may face.
In May of this year, Synopsys, which collaborates with major chip manufacturers such as TSMC and Intel, stated that Chinese regulatory authorities have requested their cooperation in reviewing this transaction.
Based on the comments received during the information collection process, regulatory authorities will either submit the transaction to the first stage investigation or clear all competitive concerns.
