Spending 20 million US dollars! Samsung purchases AMD MI300X GPU for AI development
Samsung Electronics has partnered with Team Red to purchase AMD Instinct MI300X GPU worth $20 million to meet its AI needs.
Samsung Electronics has recently started testing the newly purchased AMD Instinct MI300X GPU. The company has started its AI development journey using MI300X data center GPUs, which it says are more affordable than Nvidia's data center products.
Like most giants, Samsung Electronics is also developing its own AI and requires powerful chips to support its systems. Although companies such as Meta and xAI have chosen Nvidia H100 GPU, Samsung is taking a more affordable route. Compared to the Nvidia H100 priced at $30000 to $40000, the AMD MI300X is much cheaper. Although this GPU lags behind Nvidia Hopper's product line in AI workloads, it is considered a good choice in terms of pricing.
It is said that the AMD MI300X, priced at approximately $10000 per unit, will be released at the end of 2023 and is the flagship model of the AMD Instinct series. It is equipped with 19456 stream processors, 304 computing units, and 192GB HBM3 memory, which can be used to handle intensive workloads. Therefore, for large-scale projects, this GPU is a more cost-effective solution.
These GPUs have been sent to Samsung Research Center for testing, which is a leading institution in the DX department. The GPU has not yet undergone extreme testing, but according to Samsung insiders, AI development will take more time to fully unfold.
It is worth noting that Samsung has shipped its HBM to AMD for use in the Instinct GPU series, and recently its HBM3E memory has also passed on-site quality checks on Nvidia GPUs. It is expected that Samsung will continue to purchase GPUs from AMD in the future, and the connection between the two companies will be further strengthened.
