South Korea to Open Artificial Intelligence Chip Center in Silicon Valley

South Korea plans to open an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Semiconductor Innovation Center in San Jose, Silicon Valley.

The Korea Semiconductor Industry Association (KSIA) has announced that it will accept applications before May 30th. The committee will review the applicant's qualifications in June, and those who pass will start moving in in August.

This plan is part of the South Korean Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Resources's promotion of the export of system semiconductor technology.

The project was launched in April this year with the aim of establishing research platforms in the United States and China. The South Korean Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Resources is collaborating with industry associations such as KSIA to carry out this project.

KSIA spokesperson stated that the center will provide independent offices for 3 to 4 companies, and there will also be a large open space to accommodate other companies.

The association plans to complete the office leasing work for the AI Semiconductor Innovation Center in June this year. In order to support the local sales activities of these companies, it is also planned to appoint an expert with extensive experience in overseas semiconductor marketing and sales as the center leader. According to sources, KSIA currently has two final candidates.

The center will also support enterprise prototype testing, validation, and provide other assistance.

At the same time, the project of the South Korean Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Resources also provides funding for the Korea China System Integrated Circuit Research Institute, which was established in 2012 and has a similar role as the planned San Jose Center.

A spokesperson for the South Korean government stated that the United States is the world's largest market for high-performance computing (HPC) chips such as artificial intelligence, while China is the main market for mid to low-end system chips.

They added that more than 60% of the funding for the project will go to the United States, and the rest will go to China.
