Rapidus aims to mass produce 2nm semiconductors by 2027 and begin prototype production next year. Through this investment, Rapidus is expected to have a monthly production capacity of thousands of 2nm wafers.
Industry insiders have revealed that Rapidus will invest $90 million this year to purchase semiconductor equipment, and $600 million next year to build a 2nm semiconductor pilot line. This pilot line is a testing production facility prior to full mass production, and Rapidus without semiconductor production experience must upgrade its mass production technology through the establishment of this pilot line.
According to industry forecasts, Rapidus will build a pilot production line with a monthly output of less than 3000 pieces next year and upgrade its process technology.
Manufacturing industry officials have stated that Rapidus's entry into the manufacturing industry will not bring significant changes to the market. He said, "Rapidus' target market is different from existing contract manufacturers such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics. Our goal is to produce 'wafer level' semiconductors suitable for various types of small batch production. This method is suitable for early semiconductor development by fabless companies, rather than large-scale production."
At the same time, Rapidus is also committed to developing 1nm semiconductor processes with the goal of mass production by 2030.
It is understood that Rapidus is a contract manufacturing company jointly established by eight large Japanese enterprises, including Toyota, KIOXIA, Sony, NTT, SoftBank, Nippon Electric, Denso, and Mitsubishi UFJ, in August 2022, dedicated to the localization of cutting-edge semiconductors.
