Oracle stated in a statement that the latest investment will expand the company's cloud computing services, namely Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) coverage in Japan. The company will also expand its business and support engineering team in Japan.
In September 2023, Oracle announced that it would use Ampere Computing's flagship processor chip to drive cloud computing services. Although Oracle is the main investor of the company, this move is a significant benefit for Ampere, who has applied for an initial public offering, representing that the company's chips can be recognized by the market.
Chip company Ampere was founded by a former Intel executive who utilized Arm's architecture to develop data center chips and commissioned TSMC for contract manufacturing. The company's goal is to design chips that are more energy-efficient than traditional Intel and AMD processors and join the fierce competition in the server CPU market.
