Nvidia seeks to purchase HBM chips from Samsung

Nvidia plans to purchase high bandwidth storage (HBM) chips from Samsung, which are key components of artificial intelligence (AI) chips. Samsung is trying to catch up with its Korean counterpart SK Hynix, which has started mass production of the next generation HBM3E chips.

"HBM storage is very complex and has a very high added value. We have invested a lot of money in HBM," said Huang Renxun, co-founder and CEO of Nvidia, at a conference held in San Jose, California.

Huang Renxun stated that Nvidia is undergoing qualification certification for Samsung's HBM chips and will begin using them in the future.

HBM has become an important component of the artificial intelligence boom, as it provides faster processing speeds compared to traditional storage chips.

Huang Renxun said, "HBM is a technological miracle." He added that HBM can also improve energy efficiency, and as power consuming artificial intelligence chips become more common, it will help the world maintain sustainable development.

SK Hynix is actually the only supplier of AI chip leader NVIDIA's HBM3 chip. Although the customer list for the new HBM3E has not been disclosed, SK Hynix executives have revealed that the new chip will first be supplied to Nvidia and used for its latest Blackwell GPU.

Samsung has been investing heavily in HBM to catch up with its competitors. Samsung announced in February the development of the HBM3E 12H, the industry's first 12 layer stack HBM3E DRAM and the highest capacity HBM product to date. Samsung stated that it will begin mass production of the chip in the first half of this year.
