Micron will purchase more production factories in Taiwan to expand HBM memory production scale

Micron is looking for new production facilities in Taiwan. Micron has agreed to purchase three LCD display factories located in the central Taiwanese city of Taichung from display manufacturer AU Optronics (AUO). Micron hopes to pay NT $8.1 billion (approximately US $253.3 million). Initially, Micron intended to purchase another factory located in Tainan from INNOLUX, but was refused, so Micron turned to AUO for the purchase.

Earlier this year, TSMC spent NT $17 billion (approximately USD 531.6 million) to purchase a similar factory from INNOLUX, but INNOLUX seems unwilling to sell any more factories this year.

It is reported that AUO's three factories produce LCD color filters, two of which were shut down earlier this month. However, for some reason, the factory that is still in operation seems to be leased by AUO, and the company will continue to produce color filters at the factory. The factory has a relatively large area, occupying 146033 square meters, while the smaller one occupies 32500 square meters.

As for Micron's manufacturing plan, it is currently not well understood, but the company has announced plans to use at least some space for front-end wafer testing, and the new factory will support its currently expanding DRAM production plants in Taichung and Taoyuan.

According to reports, Taiwanese market sources stated that due to the high demand for various artificial intelligence products (at least not from Nvidia) in the market, the focus will be on HBM memory. The transaction is expected to be finalized by the end of this year.
