Micron's 232 layer QLC NAND chip has been mass-produced and shipped, launching a new SSD product

Micron announced on April 16th that its 232 layer QLC NAND flash memory chip has been mass-produced and shipped in some countries/regions. Among them, the American photon brand Crucial has mass-produced solid-state drives (SSDs) equipped with this chip for corporate customers and provided samples to OEM manufacturers.

Micron stated that the 232 layer QLC NAND chip has industry-leading storage density and performance, with a 28% increase in bit density compared to its main competitors and an I/O speed of 2400MT/s, which is 50% higher than Micron's previous generation of 176 layer QLC NAND. In addition, the reading performance has improved by 24%.

Micron also launched the world's first consumer grade solid-state drive integrated with this chip - the Micron 2500 NVMe series, which offers optional capacities of 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. The official claims that this product is the industry's first consumer grade solid-state drive equipped with over 200 layers of QLC NAND particles

Micron stated that the user experience of this product surpasses similar products based on TLC and QLC particles, and also sets new storage standards for productivity in daily PC applications and computing tasks. It achieved excellent results in the PCMark 10 benchmark, with an average score 45% higher than its competitors.

In terms of performance, the Micron 2500 NVMe series SSD has a maximum sequential read speed of 7.1GB/s, approaching the theoretical upper limit of the PCIe Gen4 interface. In terms of durability, Micron's 232 layer QLC NAND achieves strong durability. Even the smallest Micron 2500 512GB SSD can support downloading 13 4K movies per day for 3 consecutive years, with a lifespan of 200TBW.

The Micron 2500 series solid-state drives come in three specifications: 22 × 30mm, 22 × 42mm, and 22 × 80mm. The maximum capacity 2TB model has a lifespan of 600TBW and a sequential write speed of up to 6000MB/s.
