Institution: The utilization rate of wafer foundries is expected to exceed 80% in the second half of 2024
The latest report from research firm TechInsights predicts that the global storage chip market is currently performing well, mainly benefiting from the strong demand for high bandwidth memory (HBM) and the growth in the use of NAND flash memory in AI data centers. The institution expects that as the storage market recovers and companies actively prepare for the upcoming sales peak season, the capacity utilization rate of semiconductor manufacturing plants has overcome last year's low and is expected to exceed 80% in the second half of 2024.

The institution stated that the current capacity utilization rate of TSMC's advanced processes at 5nm and below is approaching saturation, and there are also reports that NAND flash memory manufacturers are about to end their production reduction measures.
Despite the hot storage market, the situation in the industrial and automotive chip markets remains unclear. Due to stagnant market demand, manufacturers in fields such as analog chips and discrete devices were forced to reduce production in the first half of 2024. The institution believes that this situation is temporary, and it is expected that with the digestion of inventory, demand in these areas will rebound in the second half of 2024, driving the improvement of capacity utilization in mature process wafer factories.
Looking ahead, with the comprehensive recovery of terminal demand, TechInsights predicts that the global wafer fab capacity utilization rate is expected to climb to around 80% in the second half of 2024, and reach an average utilization rate of about 90% by 2025.
The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics Organization (WSTS) recently predicted that the global semiconductor industry's sales growth in 2024 will reach 16.0%, expected to increase to $611.2 billion, setting a new historical record. It is expected to reach $687.4 billion by 2025. As the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) continues to rise, wafer fab equipment manufacturers and semiconductor peripheral material manufacturers will also take advantage of this trend to achieve growth.
