Institution: The shipment volume of foldable screen mobile phones will increase by 43% to 18.3 million units in 2023, ranking second among Huawei
According to TrendForce's research, it is estimated that the shipment volume of foldable screen smartphones in 2023 will be approximately 18.3 million units, an annual growth of 43%, accounting for only 1.6% of the smartphone market this year (penetration rate). The shipment volume of foldable screens is expected to increase by another 38% in 2024, approximately 25.2 million units, accounting for a small increase to 2.2%. Folding screen smartphones are expected to have a shipment volume of 70 million units by 2027, accounting for approximately 5% of the smartphone market.
The report states that the expansion of the foldable screen mobile phone market is mainly due to lower component costs and the expansion of Chinese brand layout. In terms of components, if the cost of panels and hinges is reduced, it will determine whether the retail price of foldable screen phones can stabilize towards pricing below $1000 in the future, in order to attract and enhance consumer purchasing intention.
In terms of brand, Samsung's foldable screen phones will still rank first in 2023, with an estimated shipment volume of 12.5 million units. However, their market share in the foldable screen phone market has decreased from 82% in 2022 to 68%, mainly due to the rapid growth of the number of foldable screen phones from other Chinese brands; Huawei ranks second, with an estimated shipment volume of approximately 2.5 million foldable screen smartphones this year, accounting for approximately 14% of the market share; OPPO ranks third with a market share of 5%; Xiaomi ranks fourth with a market share of 4%; The market share of other brands is below 4%.
As of now, Apple's interest in foldable screen phones is not high, which is a negative factor in boosting the purchase intention of foldable screen phones. However, Apple has always adhered to the user experience of its products, and there are still shortcomings in the panel flatness and hinge design of foldable screen phones, which should be one of the reasons why Apple has been hesitant to enter the field of foldable screen phones. However, for mid to large-sized products, the difficulty of maintaining the flatness of foldable screen panels is lower than that of small-sized products. It is not ruled out that Apple will directly develop towards mid sized laptops or tablets in foldable products in the future.
