Institution: The average memory capacity of laptops will increase to 11.8GB in 2024

Research firm TrendForce Consulting has recently observed trends in servers and laptops in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), stating that it is expected that large cloud service providers such as Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon AWS, etc. will continue to purchase high-end AI servers for training purposes in 2024. In addition, because AI PCs or AI laptops are relatively similar to AI servers in terms of basic architecture composition of computer equipment, they have a certain degree of computing power and can run smaller Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative AI and other applications. They are expected to become the last mile of cloud based AI infrastructure and edge AI small-scale training or inference applications.

The institution believes that in 2025, with the improvement of AI applications, the ability to handle complex tasks, provide better user experience, and improve productivity, it will drive a rapid increase in consumer demand for more intelligent and efficient terminal devices. The penetration rate of AI laptops will rapidly increase to 20.4%, and it is expected that this wave will also drive the growth of DRAM carrying capacity.

The institution estimates that the average DRAM memory capacity of laptops will increase from 10.5GB in 2023 to 11.8GB in 2024. Looking ahead to 2025, as the penetration rate of AI laptops increases from 1% in 2024 to 20.4% in 2025, and all AI laptops are equipped with 16GB or more of DRAM, it will at least drive the overall average memory capacity to further increase by 0.8GB, with an increase of at least 7%.

TrendForce believes that in addition to increasing DRAM capacity, AI laptops will also drive demand for more energy-efficient and high-frequency chips, which is the trend of LPDDR replacing traditional DDR. For DDR and SO-DIMM schemes that originally pursued scalability, switching to LPDDR and LPCAMM schemes that belong to the same modular category is also one of the options outside of onboard LPDDR memory.

In terms of laptop processors, the organization stated that Intel's Lunar Lake and AMD's Strix Point were both SoCs first released at the COMPUTEX exhibition in June, and both comply with AI PC standards. PC models equipped with these two types of processors are expected to become the main focus of attention in the future market. Asus, Acer, MSI and other brands will all release new models equipped with Lunar Lake or Strix Point processors. It is expected that the recommended selling price for the new AI PC will be between 1399 to 1899 US dollars (approximately 10158 to 13789 Chinese yuan).
