Institution: Samsung Display will begin mass production of the 8th generation OLED in 2026

According to a research institution, Samsung Display is expected to begin producing the 8th generation OLED panels for IT devices in the first half of 2026.

Samsung announced earlier this year that it will invest 4.1 trillion Korean won to ensure the production line of the 8th generation OLED panels.

The 8th generation refers to the size of the substrate, and larger substrates can more economically manufacture larger panels. For example, the 6th generation substrate is used to manufacture OLED panels used in smartphones. The 8th generation OLED panels will be used for large devices such as tablets, laptops, and displays, with higher production profits.

UBI Research pointed out that once funds and customers are obtained, LG Display and BOE are expected to also invest in the 8th generation OLED.

The research institution pointed out that Vicino is still in negotiations with device manufacturers to begin investing in the 8th generation OLED panels.

UBI Research added that in the future, the demand for 8th generation OLED panels from TV manufacturers will increase, making them a new source of profit for display manufacturers.

The research institution also pointed out that the expected shipment volume of IT OLED panels this year is 7.9 million pieces, but this number will jump to 18.8 million pieces next year. This is because Apple, Samsung's largest OLED panel customer, is expected to launch its first OLED iPad in 2024.

UBI Research stated that Samsung Display and LG Display are expected to use their existing 6th generation OLED production line to provide the first batch of panels for OLED iPads.
