Institution: Next year, Chinese panel manufacturers' OLED market share will increase to 50.2%, surpassing South Korea
Chinese display companies are rapidly expanding their dominant position in the smartphone OLED market, with BOE making significant progress as the main supplier of Apple's iPhone series. On September 5th, according to industry insiders, Apple has included China's BOE, Samsung Display, and LG Display in the list of OLED panel suppliers for iPhone 16.
BOE entered the Apple supply chain at the end of 2020 and has been supplying OLED panels since the iPhone 12. It is expected to supply OLED panels for the standard iPhone 16 models this year. Samsung Display will supply OLED panels for all four models: Standard, Plus, Pro, and Pro Max, while LG Display will supply panels for Pro and Pro Max models.
Currently, Samsung Display holds a 50% market share in the iPhone OLED display market, while LG Display and BOE respectively hold 30% and 20% market shares. This marks the rapid growth of BOE, with a market share of 8% in 2021.
TrendForce, a market research company, stated, "The BOE iPhone 16 series has successfully passed validation and is preparing for mass production as planned, gradually increasing shipments to Apple. This achievement indicates that BOE's products and technology are gradually gaining recognition from major global manufacturers. Brands like Apple provide more opportunities for future product supply
In addition, Apple plans to use OLED in all iPhone models starting next year, with the mid to low end iPhone SE transitioning from LCD to OLED. This is expected to further increase BOE's OLED supply. According to recent reports citing multiple sources, Apple has started ordering OLED displays for the iPhone SE4 from BOE and LG Display.
Apple's strategy to expand its OLED smartphone product line is expected to lead to smooth global supply of OLED panels. Market research firm Omdia predicts that the number of OLED display panels for smartphones will increase from 610 million last year to 800 million this year, a growth of 31.1%. In addition, the share of OLED in the total number of smartphone display panels is expected to jump from 42.7% in 2023 to 55.8% in 2024, an increase of 13.1 percentage points.
According to reports, in addition to BOE expanding its global dominance as part of the Apple ecosystem, other Chinese companies such as Visionox and TCL Huaxing Optoelectronics are rapidly expanding their presence in the OLED market by leveraging price competitiveness and the vast domestic market. Vishino expects OLED panel shipments to reach 80 million pieces this year, and Tianma and TCL Huaxing Optoelectronics may also surpass previous records by increasing smartphone panel shipments this year.
According to market research firm CINNO Research, in the first half of this year, the global shipment share of OLED smartphone panels was 16.1% for BOE, 11.3% for ViSino, 9.7% for Huaxing Optoelectronics, and 9% for Tianma. The rapid growth of China's OLED market is expected to soon surpass that of South Korea. TrendForce predicts that OLED smartphone panel shipments next year will increase by 3.2% compared to this year, reaching 870 million pieces. It is also predicted that the market share of Chinese panel manufacturers will increase from 47.9% this year to 50.2% next year, surpassing the OLED shipment share of Korean companies.
