India allows unrestricted import of laptops and tablets
The Indian government decided on October 19th to allow unrestricted imports of laptops and tablets, and launched a new "authorization" system aimed at monitoring the shipment volume of such hardware without damaging market supply.
Officials said that the new "import management system" will come into effect on November 1st, requiring companies to register the quantity and value of imports and use these data for monitoring, but the government will not refuse any import requests.
Senior Officer of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology S Krishnan stated that its purpose is to "ensure that all of this provides us with the necessary data and information to ensure that we have a fully trusted digital system".
On August 3rd, India implemented a licensing system for the import of laptops and tablets, but this decision was quickly postponed after criticism from the industry and the United States. The plan will allow the government to delay or refuse import requests, while requiring licenses for each batch of goods.
This decision has breathed a sigh of relief for global laptop manufacturers such as Dell, HP, Apple, Samsung, and Lenovo, who have been feeling uneasy since the announcement of the system in August.
Between April and August, India's imports of electronic products and software (including laptops, tablets, and personal computers) reached $33.6 billion, an increase of nearly 8% compared to last year.
The Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) expressed its deep appreciation for the government's recent decision to maintain unrestricted imports of laptops and tablets.
