In 2023, the sales of Japanese chip equipment reached nearly 3.3 trillion yen, a year-on-year decrease of 6.7%
In December 2023, Japan's semiconductor chip manufacturing equipment sales continued to achieve month on month growth, returning to the 300 billion yen mark. The full year sales in 2023 reached 3287.2 billion yen, setting a historic second highest.

According to statistics released by the Japan Semiconductor Manufacturing Association (SEAJ) on January 26, the sales of Japanese made chip equipment in December 2023 were 305.799 billion yen, an increase of 2.4% from November 2023, marking the second consecutive month on month growth.
Compared to the same month in 2022, it has slightly declined by 0.3%, marking the seventh consecutive month of contraction. However, the proportion of 11% decline compared to the previous month has significantly decreased.
In 2023, Japan's annual sales of chip equipment reached 3287.245 billion yen, a year-on-year decrease of 6.7%, marking the first time in four years that it has experienced a contraction. However, sales reached a record high (only lower than 3851.699 billion yen in 2022).
SEAJ members include Tokyo Electronics, Edwin, and Screen, among others. The industry organization predicts that in addition to the recovery of wafer foundries and logic chip manufacturers, spending by storage chip manufacturers will significantly recover during the second half of fiscal year 2023 (September 2023 to March 2024). It is expected that the annual compound growth rate will continue to remain at 10% by March 2026.
SEAJ stated that driven by the demand for new expenditures related to artificial intelligence (AI), Japan's semiconductor equipment sales are expected to soar by 27% in the fiscal year 2024 (starting from April 2024), reaching 403 trillion yen (approximately 27 billion US dollars).
