Hanwha Group VisioNexT will use Samsung 4nm to produce AI chips
Samsung Electronics is actively expanding its 4nm OEM customers. It is reported that VisioNexT, a subsidiary of Hanwha Group, will place an order with Samsung to produce 4nm artificial intelligence (AI) chips, hoping that this move can bring breakthroughs to the field of visual AI. It is expected to be put into operation as early as the first half of 2024.
Semiconductor industry insiders say that VisioNexT mainly focuses on CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) surveillance camera chips and is investing in high-performance semiconductor research and development such as visual AI to meet market demand. It has commissioned Samsung's foundry for manufacturing, and this collaboration will include years of preparation in high-performance AI semiconductor design and process research and development.
VisioNexT is an IC design company under the Hanwha Group and is investing in semiconductors dedicated to visual AI, which can analyze images and videos collected from smart closed-circuit televisions. Previously, Samsung's 4nm process was mainly used in fields such as high-performance computing (HPC) and autonomous vehicle. VisioNexT aims to become the first company to introduce visual AI semiconductors into 4nm through collaboration with Samsung.
It is understood that the collaboration between Samsung's wafer foundry business and Hanwha Group began in 2015 when Hanwha Group acquired Samsung Techwin. At that time, Hanwha Group Techwin continued to collaborate with Samsung to produce its self-developed security and visual chips. In 2021, the SoC R&D department of Hanwha Group Techwin separated and became independent as VisioNexT, and the partnership has continued to this day.
Recently, Samsung has been continuously improving the yield of its advanced processes and expanding its customer base. Google's smartphone AP, AI semiconductor Groq, and Tensorrent will all use Samsung's 4nm process manufacturing services. This collaboration with Hanwha Group will contribute to the growth of Samsung's OEM business and lay the foundation for cooperation with local Korean companies.
Recently, VisioNexT has also identified semiconductors as a development focus. In addition to 4nm, 8nm products may also be commissioned for mass production by Samsung. In addition, it has also ventured into emerging fields such as semiconductor equipment and GaN (gallium nitride) power semiconductors. Similarly, Samsung's goal is to promote compound semiconductor manufacturing, including GaN, by 2025. Therefore, the cooperation between the two companies is expected to further deepen.
