Global CPU shipments increased by 12% and 7.8% year-on-year in the third and second quarters of this year, respectively
The latest Jon Peddie Research report shows that the overall PC CPU market will experience growth in 2024. The CPU market experienced negative growth in 2021 and 2022, but now it is finally beginning to recover, with good growth in shipments both quarterly and annually. The client CPU market (shipment volume) is growing, and the server CPU market is also experiencing significant growth in the third quarter of 2024.
According to Jon Peddie Research's report, the overall PC CPU market grew by 12.2% in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the second quarter of 2024. In the second quarter, the total shipment of PC CPUs was less than 60 million units, significantly lower than the shipment of nearly 75 million units in the first quarter of 2024. The third quarter finally reached around 70 million units, which is a good sign for the PC market.
The third quarter generally shows positive growth, but there has been a significant decline in the third quarters of 2021 and 2022. In the third quarter of 2023, the market will rise by more than 15%, and in 2024, the overall CPU market will grow by 7.8% year-on-year. Compared to the second quarter of 2024, the share of laptop CPUs has once again increased from 24% to 30%, while the share of desktop CPUs is approximately 70%. Dr. Jon Peddie, the President of the company, stated:
China has led the growth of personal computer CPUs, a large part of which comes from Lenovo
The client PC market continues to fluctuate, but the significant growth in the third quarter is pleasing. The benefits, if any, brought by artificial intelligence PCs are difficult to determine.
In the third quarter of 2024, the shipment volume of iGPU also showed an upward trend, increasing by 7% compared to the second quarter. Compared to 2023, the year-on-year growth rate is about 6%, which is not surprising as both AMD and Intel have significantly improved iGPU on desktop and laptop platforms.
In terms of servers, CPU shipments increased by 10.5% compared to the second quarter of 2024, representing a year-on-year growth of 2%. The overall impression of client and server CPUs is positive, but there is still a gap compared to shipments in 2020 and 2021. I hope that with the increasing demand for artificial intelligence and AI driven hardware, CPU shipments will also increase next year.
