China vigorously purchases mature node equipment in the chip industry

"According to the Electronic Times, Chinese semiconductor manufacturers are actively purchasing mature process chip equipment to cope with restrictions on chip technology exports from the United States and its allies. Many Japanese manufacturers have already felt strong demand for mature process chip equipment in the Chinese market. On the other hand, China has set a goal of achieving a self-sufficiency rate of 70% for semiconductor equipment and is focusing on developing mature processes.

Japanese semiconductor equipment companies such as Tokyo Electronics (TEL) and Nikon have also noticed an increasing number of orders for mature process chip equipment in the Chinese market.

According to Bloomberg, Tokyo Electronics stated that Chinese semiconductor factories are purchasing mature process equipment on a large scale, and this trend is expected to continue beyond 2023.

Although advanced process logic IC manufacturers and wafer foundries are currently delaying equipment investment, Chinese companies purchasing mature process equipment can help alleviate some of the adverse market conditions.

In its financial report released in August this year, Nikon pointed out that due to a decrease in maintenance service revenue and delays in the installation of some lithography machines, the performance of its lithography machine business in the first half of 2023 (April September) will be lower than initially expected. This is the result of challenging market competition.

According to Nikon's survey, a total of 480 lithography machines (including new and second-hand equipment) were sold globally in 2022. It is expected that by 2023, due to a decrease in customer equipment demand, this number will decrease to around 430 units, a year-on-year decrease of about 10%.

Nikon expects to sell more ArF lithography machines in 2023. Nikon also stated that its new ArF machine model ""NSR-S625E"" can be exported to China. There are still a considerable number of ArF dry lithography machines in the existing transactions, and Nikon's lithography machine sales are expected to expand in the Chinese market.

Nikon acknowledges the active investment activities of Chinese semiconductor factories and acknowledges that its sales activities in China have consistently lagged behind competitors. However, they are gradually improving this situation.

On the other hand, in addition to strengthening the procurement of mature process equipment that is not restricted by prohibitions, China is also committed to improving the self-sufficiency rate of equipment. According to the Nikkei News, China and enterprises are accelerating the construction of local semiconductor equipment supply chains, with the goal of increasing the self-sufficiency rate of semiconductor equipment to 70%.

In the first half of 2023, the import volume of chips and semiconductor equipment in China decreased, but at the same time, the annual growth of domestic equipment production was 30%, while chip production only decreased by 3%."
