Belgian startup raises $25 million to develop Micro LED
Founded in 2019, Belgian startup Micledi Microdisplays recently raised approximately $25 million in Series A financing to commercialize Micro LED screens developed for augmented reality AR glasses. This round of financing involves the participation of semiconductor research and development institution IMEC, bringing the total financing amount of the company to nearly 30 million US dollars.
Micledi utilized funding previously raised in 2020 to validate the manufacturing process on 300mm wafers and demonstrated that blue and green Micro LED light sources based on gallium nitride have similar performance to red light sources. In addition, they have performance surpassing red light emitting materials on AlInGaP substrates. The CEO of the company stated that the latest round of financing will be used to expand the team, design and build active backplane ASICs, and manufacture fully functional Micro LED display modules for AR glasses.
It is understood that Micledi is a fabless wafer free company, but has reached agreements with wafer factories such as Gexin, and will use Gexin CMOS technology to produce backplane ASIC chips.
The company added that it is developing green and blue arrays based on quantum dot luminescence technology, and is expected to launch the first AR glasses for demonstration in the second quarter of 2024.
