Arizona and TSMC Negotiate on Advanced Packaging

On September 19th, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs stated that they are in talks with TSMC regarding advanced packaging.

Hobbes stated that she met with TSMC executives on September 18th. We discussed the ongoing partnership, their investment in Arizona, and how we can continue to address any issues that arise, "she said

In July this year, TSMC said that the Arizona factory in the United States originally planned to mass produce in 2024, but due to the lack of professional workers, the mass production of its first chip manufacturing factory in the United States will be postponed to 2025, and it is sending technical personnel from Taiwan, China to train local employees.

TSMC will invest $40 billion in this project to support the US plan to increase chip manufacturing domestically.

Not long ago, many TSMC engineers and former Apple employees said that the advanced chips manufactured by TSMC's Arizona factory for Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Tesla and other important customers still need to be sent to Taiwan, China for advanced packaging. Moreover, TSMC currently has no plans to build packaging plants in Arizona or the United States, with high costs being the main reason.
