AI startup Anthropic will adopt Google Cloud TPU v5e chip

Artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic will become one of the first companies to use Google's new chips under Alphabet, deepening their partnership after recently reaching a cloud computing agreement.

Two companies have stated that Antiopic will deploy Google's Cloud TPU v5e chip to support the development and operation of the Claude large language model. This type of software uses a large amount of data to train AI interfaces, allowing them to answer questions and generate dialogue text.

As the competition to build larger AI models intensifies, technology giants such as Google are building relationships with cutting-edge startups in the field. According to sources familiar with the matter, Antiopic recently agreed to spend over $3 billion over four years to purchase Google's cloud computing services. In addition, Google has promised to invest $2 billion in this startup company.

Since its establishment in 2021, Anthropic has been using Google Cloud services. The two companies stated that as part of the new agreement, Antiopic will make greater use of Google Cloud's infrastructure and security features.

We are very excited about the efficiency of TPU, "Antonio CEO Dario Amodei said of Google chips." These are already beginning to bring us benefits

Google's competitor in the cloud services field, Amazon, is also a supporter of Anthropic. Amazon stated in a document that it is investing $1.25 billion in convertible notes and has the ability to invest another $2.75 billion.

Amazon has also reached an agreement with Anthropic to allow the startup to use its AWS cloud services and chips. Amazon stated that Anthropic plans to "run most of its workloads on AWS". Dario Amodei emphasized that Anthropic is adopting a "multi cloud" approach, which means it will not collaborate exclusively with any supplier.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian stated that he is not troubled by the collaboration between Anthropic and AWS. Large companies always want to choose multiple clouds - this helps them fully leverage the advantages of each cloud, and we are accustomed to competing and collaborating with other cloud providers

Thomas Kurian added that he sees the latest TPU chip as a selling point for Google Cloud. In addition to Anthropic, AI startups Hugging Face and AssemblyAI are also using these chips. Google also uses this technology to support its own products, such as the chat robot Bard.
